CUSTOMER QUESTIONS

Vinyl Banners — Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between 13 oz. and 18 oz. vinyl banners?

Both materials are UV printed, waterproof, and suitable for indoor and outdoor use. 13 oz. matte vinyl is the standard choice for most banners. 18 oz. blockout matte vinyl is heavier, scrim-reinforced, and includes a blockout layer between the vinyl faces, making it better suited for street banners, light pole banners, and longer-term outdoor installations.

Which hanging option should I choose for my banner?

For smaller or temporary banners, corner grommets are often sufficient. For larger outdoor banners, grommets placed every 2–3 feet help distribute tension more evenly and reduce sagging. Choose a 3” pole pocket when your banner will be installed on a pole or rod. Pole pockets are available at the top only or at both the top and bottom, depending on how the banner will be displayed. You can also order a banner without grommets or pole pockets if you do not need finishing for hanging.

Do I need wind slits in my vinyl banner?

Wind slits are small cuts in the banner material that allow some air to pass through and can reduce wind pressure on large outdoor banners. They may be useful in open or exposed locations. For consistently windy areas, a mesh banner may be a better option because the perforated material allows more airflow. Indoor banners and banners installed in sheltered locations generally do not need wind slits.

What resolution should my vinyl banner artwork be?

Submit your artwork at 150 dpi minimum at the final printed size. Large-format graphics do not require the same 300 dpi resolution typically used for smaller printed pieces. Very low-resolution artwork may appear soft or pixelated when enlarged to full banner size.

What file format should I submit for a vinyl banner?

Submit a print-ready PDF or high-resolution JPG/JPEG in CMYK color mode. Do not include crop marks or bleeds, and convert all live fonts to outlines before saving. For front-and-back printing, upload the front and back artwork as two separate files.

How close can text and logos be to the edge of my banner?

The safe area depends on the hanging option you choose. For 3” pole pockets, keep important text, logos, and other critical artwork at least 2” from the finished edge where the pole pocket will be added. This provides extra clearance beyond the area used to form the pocket. For a top-only pole pocket, this applies to the top edge; for top-and-bottom pole pockets, it applies to both edges. For banners with grommets, keep important content at least 1.25” from all finished edges so it does not interfere with the grommets or finishing.

How will my vinyl banner be shipped?

Banners with a shortest side of 88 inches or less ship rolled. Banners with a shortest side of 89 inches or more ship folded.

Can I review my vinyl banner before it prints?

After uploading your artwork, you can generate a low-resolution PDF proof from the shopping cart to review before checkout. Carefully check your artwork, spelling, layout, and sizing before confirming your order. If our in-house design team creates or prepares your banner artwork, we’ll provide a design proof for your approval before printing.

Can you design my vinyl banner for me?

Yes. Our in-house design team can create your vinyl banner artwork from scratch or work with your existing logo, branding, and other materials.
