Lies flat for easy reading, writing, and reference.
When your booklet needs to stay open while someone is reading, writing, or working, coil binding is a practical choice. Unlike perfect bound books that naturally tend to close, coil bound booklets rotate a full 360 degrees and lie flat, making them ideal for manuals, workbooks, reference guides, training materials, cookbooks, and presentations that are used while someone works or follows along.
Choose from two finished sizes — 5.5" × 8.5" or 8.5" × 11" — with quantities from 5 to 1,000. Select black or white plastic coils and choose 100# Gloss or 100# Smooth Covers for a separate heavier cover, or use the selected inside paper throughout the booklet. Inside paper options include 100# Gloss Text, 60# Text, and 32# Text. Clear acetate front covers with black backers are also available with either black or white coil. Choose full-color or black-ink printing, with front-only or front-and-back printing options to fit your project.
Whether you’re creating employee training manuals, classroom workbooks, procedure guides, product catalogs, instructional materials, or organizational handbooks, coil binding provides a professional presentation while allowing pages to turn freely and remain open during use.
Based in Woodbury, NJ, we’ve been helping businesses, schools, nonprofits, and organizations throughout South Jersey produce professional printed materials since 1973.
A compact format that’s easy to carry and store. Well suited to workbooks, training guides, recipe collections, field manuals, reference guides, event booklets, and course packets that travel with the reader.
A full-size format well suited to employee handbooks, training manuals, instruction guides, product catalogs, policy manuals, presentations, and classroom materials. The larger page provides additional room for photographs, diagrams, charts, tables, and detailed content.
Download the template for your booklet size and coil position. Templates include trim marks, bleed area, and safe zone guides. Set up each page at the single-page size — do not set up as spreads. Note that crossover images spanning two pages are not recommended with coil binding as the coil gap creates a visible break.
Not sure which coil position to choose? Left side binding is standard for portrait orientation booklets read like a book. Top side binding works well for landscape orientation or flip-style manuals. Need help? Call us at 856.845.2234 or email quotes@belliaprinting.com.
Coil binding uses a continuous plastic coil threaded through punched holes along the binding edge of the booklet. Pages can rotate a full 360 degrees and lie flat at any opening, making coil bound booklets especially useful for training manuals, workbooks, directories, reference guides, cookbooks, and other materials that need to remain open during use.
Coil binding uses one continuous plastic spiral threaded from one end of the booklet to the other. Wire-O binding uses a series of metal double loops. Both styles allow pages to lie flat, while coil binding uses a flexible plastic binding that allows pages to rotate a full 360 degrees.
Crossover images or designs that continue from one page onto the facing page are not recommended for coil bound booklets. The punched binding area and space between the pages will create a visible break in the image. Full-bleed images contained on a single page work well, but important visual elements should not rely on aligning across a spread.
Keep important text, logos, page numbers, and other critical design elements at least 0.5" from the binding edge. This provides room for the punched holes and plastic coil so important content on the front cover and inside pages does not interfere with the binding or become partially obscured.
Choose from black or white plastic coil. Black provides a classic appearance that works with a wide range of designs, while white offers a lighter look that can complement light-colored covers and layouts. Choose the coil color that works best with the overall design of your booklet.
Yes. Clear acetate front covers with black backers are available as an optional finishing choice. You can also choose either a black or white plastic coil. This option adds a clear protective layer over the front of the booklet while allowing your printed cover artwork to remain visible.
No. You can choose 100# Gloss Cover or 100# Smooth Cover for a separate heavier cover, or choose no separate cover and use the selected inside paper throughout the booklet. Inside paper options include 100# Gloss Text, 60# Text, and 32# Text.
Yes. Custom tabbed dividers can help organize manuals, training materials, directories, workbooks, and reference guides into clearly labeled sections. Submit your booklet as a print-ready multipage PDF in CMYK color mode, with the pages arranged in the intended reading order. Raster photographs and graphics should be approximately 300 dpi at the final printed size. Include the appropriate bleed when artwork extends to the page edge, and keep important text, logos, page numbers, and other critical design elements at least 0.5" from the binding edge. Before submitting your order, carefully review your artwork, spelling, layout, and page order.
After uploading your artwork and adding your coil bound booklet to the shopping cart, you can download a low-resolution PDF proof before proceeding to checkout. Use the proof to review placement, sizing, orientation, page order, and overall appearance. If Bellia’s in-house design team creates or prepares your booklet artwork, we’ll provide a design proof for your approval before it goes to print.
