Unlike perfect bound books that naturally close themselves, coil bound booklets rotate a full 360 degrees and lie completely flat, making them ideal for manuals, workbooks, reference guides, training materials, cookbooks, and presentations that are used every day.
Choose from two popular finished sizes — 5.5"×8.5" or 8.5"×11" — with quantities from 5 to 1,000. Select black or white plastic coils, premium gloss or smooth covers, optional clear acetate front covers with black backers, and interior paper stocks ranging from economical 32# text to premium 100# gloss text. Download the template for your booklet size and coil position. Templates include trim marks, bleed area, and safe zone guides. Set up each page at the single-page size — do not set up as spreads. Note that crossover images spanning two pages are not recommended with coil binding as the coil gap creates a visible break.

Coil binding uses a continuous plastic coil threaded through punched holes along the binding edge of the booklet. Pages can rotate a full 360 degrees and lie flat at any opening, making coil bound booklets especially useful for training manuals, workbooks, directories, reference guides, cookbooks, and other materials that receive frequent use.
Coil binding uses one continuous plastic spiral threaded from one end of the booklet to the other. Wire-O binding uses a series of metal double loops. Both styles allow pages to lie flat, but plastic coil is flexible and durable, making it a practical choice for manuals, workbooks, and reference materials that are handled regularly.
Crossover images or designs that continue from one page onto the facing page are not recommended for coil bound booklets. The punched binding area and space between the pages will create a visible break in the image. Full-bleed images contained on a single page work well, but important visual elements should not rely on aligning across a spread.
Keep text, logos, page numbers, and other important content at least 0.5" from the binding edge. The coil holes remove a small amount of material along that side, and content placed too close may be punched through, trimmed, or partially obscured by the coil.
Black coil is the most common choice and coordinates with most designs. White coil creates a lighter appearance that works well with minimalist layouts, light-colored covers, and professional presentations. Choose the color that best complements the cover and overall design of your booklet.
Clear acetate front covers and black back covers may be available for projects that need additional protection and a more polished presentation. They are often selected for corporate manuals, directories, training materials, reports, and formal handouts. Confirm available cover options when placing your order or request a custom quote.
Yes. Coil bound booklets are printed on individual sheets with two printable sides, so the finished page count must be an even number. If your content ends on an odd-numbered page, a blank page may need to be added. We can help determine the best page count and layout for your project.
Yes. Coil binding works well with tabbed dividers because pages turn freely and lie flat. Dividers can help organize manuals, training materials, directories, workbooks, and reference guides into clearly labeled sections. Because divider requirements vary, request a custom quote or email quotes@belliaprinting.com with the number of tabs, section names, quantity, and booklet specifications.
Submit a print-ready PDF in CMYK color mode. Raster photographs and graphics should be approximately 300 dpi at the final printed size. Include bleed when artwork extends to the page edge, keep important content at least 0.5" from the binding edge, and submit pages in the intended reading order. Before submitting your order, carefully review your artwork, spelling, layout, and page order to make sure everything is correct.
Once you upload your artwork, you’ll review it and check a confirmation box verifying it’s correct before your order moves into production — there’s no separate proof step for uploaded artwork. If our in-house design team creates your booklet for you, we’ll share a design proof for your approval before it goes to print.
